    Much lesser known by modern tourists as compared to Xinjiang, this slender province of Gansu has long seen travelers and goods of all kinds traveling between China and Central Asia. This itinerary covers the highlights of the Hexi Corridor, including the famous Rainbow Rocks of Zhangye Danxia to the Mogao Caves.

Itinerary

  • Day 01 - Hong Kong / Shenzhan / Zhangye

    This morning, your driver will pick you up from your residence for transfer to Shenzhen Airport for your flight.

    Fly Shenzhen / Lanzhou ZH 9239 0935/1245 – except Monday (3h10m)
      Lanzhou/ Zhangye GS 7647 1450/1550 – except Wed (1h)

     

    Upon arrival, visit the Giant Buddha Temple, the reputed birthplace of the great Mongol Emperor Kublai Khan. If you’re feeling up for it, you may also like to visit the other temples in town – Xilai TempleWooden Pagoda Temple. Prepare an overnight (or rather, 2-night) bag for your desert stay and leave your bags in Zhangye.

  • Day 02 - Zhangye / Badain Jaran

    Have a leisurely morning before driving into the Badain Jaran desert.

    Settle in to your comfortable tents with twin beds and enjoy a dinner under the stars.

  • Day 03 - Badain Jaran

    Go on an expedition today with your 4x4 and discover the desert lakes and the well-preserved Badain Jaran monastery. Visit the Bilitu Peak.

  • Day 04 - Badain Jaran / Alashan Youqi / Mati Si / Zhangye

    En route back to Zhangye, stop for lunch at Alashan Youqi, and have the rest of the day at leisure, or visit the remaining temples.

    Continue on to the Mati Si, or Horse’s Hoof Temple, famous for its grottoes and spectacularly located cave temples. Visit the Thousand Buddha Caves, among the most accessible of the grottoes.

  • Day 05 - Zhangye / Zhangye Danxia / Jiayuguan

    Visit Zhangye Danxia Landform Geological Park. Spend some time around the park taking sightseeing buses around the four viewing platforms. Take a packed breakfast and try and time your visit with the sunrise when the colors are most vibrant, along with sunset and after it rains.

    Drive on to Jiayuguan and check-in to your hotel.

  • Day 06 - Jiayuguan

    The full day will be devoted to visiting the gems around the “Mouth of China”. The gems include the iconic Jiayuguan Fort, and the Overhanging Great Wall. Also visit one of the public-accessible Wei Jin Tombs, approx. 15km northeast of town.

  • Day 07 - Jiayuguan / Dunhuang

    Drive to Dunhuang.

    This evening, have some time to explore the night bazaar at your own leisure.

  • Day 08 - Dunhuang

    This morning, visit the Mogao Caves.

    After a short rest, take a tour with a camel ride to view Mingsha Shan (the Singing Sands Mountain), named after the natural phenomena. You will also visit the Crescent Moon Lake – a natural wonder in the Gobi Desert. Relax and enjoy a fantastic sunset dinner by the dunes.

  • Day 09 - Dunhuang / Hong Kong

    Transfer to the airport for flight.
